Commonly Asked Questions

Q.  Are metal cleats allowed?

A.  For Mickey Mantle and Sandy Koufax only.

Q.  What happens at Evaluations?

A.  Here is the form we use.  For Willie Mays and Pee Wee Reese, we use the Pitching Machine with hard dimpled baseballs for hitting, soft incrediballs for the pop flies, and hard baseballs for ground balls.

Q.  What does my child need for evaluations?

A.  Comfortable pants (wind pants or sweatpants), tennis shoes, t-shirt/sweatshirt, cap, and bring a glove.

Q.  How can I find out more information about what the prices are this year, when games start, and other questions?

A.  The website is updated with Registration forms and packets for each play level.  Go to FORMS.

Q.  I heard about a daytime program.  What's this about?

A.  Contact Big Lake Community Education at 763-262-2523.

Q.  What's with the rule regarding age?

A.  In 2006, the AABC changed the cut-off date for players birthdays at April 30.  The BLBA decided at a previous board meeting that players will play at their AGE LEVEL.  A player can, though, "move up" to play with his/her GRADE LEVEL.

Roberto Clemente (6, 7 & 8 year olds as of April 30, 2010)

Willie Mays AAA & AA (9 & 10 year olds as of April 30,
2010)
Pee Wee Reese: (11 & 12 year olds as of April 30,
2010)
Sandy Koufax: (13 & 14 year olds as of April 30,
2010)
Mickey Mantle (15 & 16 year olds as of April 30,
2010)

Q.  How are registration fees determined?

A.  Our registration fee is determined after looking at our operating costs--uniforms, equipment, umpires, equipment, field maintenance, insurance and league fees. Big Lake Community Education charges us a fee per participant to have baseball played on the school fields.  In 2008 the BLBA was charged $10 for Roberto Clemente and $18 for all other players.

Q.  Can we still register for Summer Baseball?

A.  Click here for a Registration form.

Q.  What are the requirements for bats?

A.  In Mickey Mantle and Sandy Koufax (14AAA) tournament play, wood or non wood bats may not exceed minus three (-3) in differential between length and weight and may not be larger than 2 5/8 inches in diameter. For Sandy Koufax (13AAA and 14AA), Pee Wee Reese, Willie Mays and Roberto Clemente, bats may not be larger in diameter than 2 3/4 inches. There is no differential.

Q.  How do the Evaluations run?

A.  Each player needs to go through Evaluations to assess players on abilities to see which team would work the best for him/her.  The top 15 (or so) scores from the 1st evaluation get invited back for a 2nd evaluation.  The team must be picked from the top 15 kids after the 2nd Evaluation.  If a child is not able to make both evaluations, then their one score would be multiplied by 2 to see where their score would land in relation to the other scores.  If the child’s score is not in the window of the scores of the top 15, then the child is not eligible for the AAA team.  If the multiplied score reaches the Top 8, the child would need to be a coach’s pick.  The children who finished in the Top 8 are automatically entitled to the AAA team.  The coaching staff has the choice of the other 4 players, adhering to the guidelines above.

Q.  Do the players need to return anything after the season is over?

A.  Players keep all clothing.  The only thing that needs to be returned is the equipment that was issued to coaches.

Q.  What are the time requirements?

A.  For Roberto Clemente (6, 7, 8 year olds), players play two days a week, generally on Monday's and Wednesdays.  Willie Mays IN-HOUSE (9 and 10) play two days a week, generally on Tuesday's and Thursdays.  Pee Wee Reese IN-HOUSE (11 and 12) play two days a week.  The 13-16 year olds have varied schedules.  The AAA teams (traveling) have varied schedules.  Practices are dependant on the coaches, but teams generally practice once a week during the season (and about twice a week before the season).
